  • Study on classification and identification of depressed patients and healthy people among adolescents based on optimization of brain characteristics of network

To enhance the accuracy of computer-aided diagnosis of adolescent depression based on electroencephalogram signals, this study collected signals of 32 female adolescents (16 depressed and 16 healthy, age: 16.3 ± 1.3) with eyes colsed for 4 min in a resting state. First, based on the phase synchronization between the signals, the phase-locked value (PLV) method was used to calculate brain functional connectivity in the θ and α frequency bands, respectively. Then based on the graph theory method, the network parameters, such as strength of the weighted network, average characteristic path length, and average clustering coefficient, were calculated separately (P < 0.05). Next, using the relationship between multiple thresholds and network parameters, the area under the curve (AUC) of each network parameter was extracted as new features (P < 0.05). Finally, support vector machine (SVM) was used to classify the two groups with the network parameters and their AUC as features. The study results show that with strength, average characteristic path length, and average clustering coefficient as features, the classification accuracy in the θ band is increased from 69% to 71%, 66% to 77%, and 50% to 68%, respectively. In the α band, the accuracy is increased from 72% to 79%, 69% to 82%, and 65% to 75%, respectively. And from overall view, when AUC of network parameters was used as a feature in the α band, the classification accuracy is improved compared to the network parameter feature. In the θ band, only the AUC of average clustering coefficient was applied to classification, and the accuracy is improved by 17.6%. The study proved that based on graph theory, the method of feature optimization of brain function network could provide some theoretical support for the computer-aided diagnosis of adolescent depression.

  • Resting-state electroencephalogram classification of patients with schizophrenia or depression

The clinical manifestations of patients with schizophrenia and patients with depression not only have a certain similarity, but also change with the patient's mood, and thus lead to misdiagnosis in clinical diagnosis. Electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis provides an important reference and objective basis for accurate differentiation and diagnosis between patients with schizophrenia and patients with depression. In order to solve the problem of misdiagnosis between patients with schizophrenia and patients with depression, and to improve the accuracy of the classification and diagnosis of these two diseases, in this study we extracted the resting-state EEG features from 100 patients with depression and 100 patients with schizophrenia, including information entropy, sample entropy and approximate entropy, statistical properties feature and relative power spectral density (rPSD) of each EEG rhythm (δ, θ, α, β). Then feature vectors were formed to classify these two types of patients using the support vector machine (SVM) and the naive Bayes (NB) classifier. Experimental results indicate that: ① The rPSD feature vector P performs the best in classification, achieving an average accuracy of 84.2% and a highest accuracy of 86.3%; ② The accuracy of SVM is obviously better than that of NB; ③ For the rPSD of each rhythm, the β rhythm performs the best with the highest accuracy of 76%; ④ Electrodes with large feature weight are mainly concentrated in the frontal lobe and parietal lobe. The results of this study indicate that the rPSD feature vector P in conjunction with SVM can effectively distinguish depression and schizophrenia, and can also play an auxiliary role in the relevant clinical diagnosis.

  • Association between adolescent chronotype and depressive symptoms: a meta-analysis

ObjectiveTo systematically review the association between chronotype and depressive symptoms among adolescents. MethodsCNKI, VIP, WanFang Data, PubMed, ScienceDirect and Web of Science databases were electronically searched to collect studies on the association between adolescent chronotype and depressive symptoms from inception to January 17th, 2022. Two reviewers independently screened literature, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias of the included studies. Meta-analysis was then performed using Stata 16.0 software. ResultsA total of 12 studies were included. The results of meta-analysis showed that there was an association between chronotype and depressive symptoms (Fisher’s Z=−0.19, 95%CI −0.21 to −0.17, P<0.001). ConclusionCurrent evidence shows that evening-type chronotype may be a risk factor for depressive symptoms among adolescents. Due to the limited quality and quantity of the included studies, more high-quality studies are needed to verify the above conclusion.

  • Anxiety and depressive symptoms and their influential factors among patients with intrauterine adhesions managed by day surgery model

Objective To investigate the incidences of anxiety and depressive symptoms among patients with intrauterine adhesions (IUA) managed by day surgery model, and explore their influential factors. Methods Convenience sampling was used to select patients who underwent day surgery at West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University between January 2021 and December 2022. General information questionnaire and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used to assess the socio-demographic data and anxiety and depressive symptoms of the participants. Logistic regression was used to analyze the influential factors of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Results A total of 1100 patients were included. The incidence of anxiety and depressive were 16.5% (181/1 100) and 16.9% (186/1 100) among patients undergoing day surgery for IUA respectively. Longer waiting days for admission [odds ratio (OR)=1.012, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.004, 1.020), P=0.004], married [OR=0.547, 95%CI (0.344, 0.869), P=0.011], more times of adhesion separation [OR=0.826, 95%CI (0.691, 0.986), P=0.034], older age [OR=0.947, 95%CI (0.909, 0.987), P=0.010] were influencing factors for anxiety symptoms in patients with IUA. Unemployment [OR=0.504, 95%CI (0.256, 0.994), P=0.048], university or undergraduate education [OR=0.326, 95%CI (0.208, 0.512), P<0.001], and high school or vocational school education [OR=0.532, 95%CI (0.319, 0.888), P=0.016] were the influencing factors for depressive symptoms in patients with IUA. Conclusions There is a high incidence of anxiety and depressive symptoms among patients with IUA under the management of day surgery mode. The influential factors include socio-demographic factors (age, education level, marital status and occupation) and disease factors (times of adhesion). Medical staff should pay attention to the early screening of mental health status of patients with IUA, and give targeted prevention and treatment measures.

  • Effect of electroconvulsive therapy on brain functional network in major depressive disorder

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an interventional technique capable of highly effective neuromodulation in major depressive disorder (MDD), but its antidepressant mechanism remains unclear. By recording the resting-state electroencephalogram (RS-EEG) of 19 MDD patients before and after ECT, we analyzed the modulation effect of ECT on the resting-state brain functional network of MDD patients from multiple perspectives: estimating spontaneous EEG activity power spectral density (PSD) using Welch algorithm; constructing brain functional network based on imaginary part coherence (iCoh) and calculate functional connectivity; using minimum spanning tree theory to explore the topological characteristics of brain functional network. The results show that PSD, functional connectivity, and topology in multiple frequency bands were significantly changed after ECT in MDD patients. The results of this study reveal that ECT changes the brain activity of MDD patients, which provides an important reference in the clinical treatment and mechanism analysis of MDD.

  • Mental Intervention for Cancer Patients with Depression: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Objective To systematically evaluate the effects of psychotherapy for cancer patients with depression. Methods We searched The Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMbase, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese Scientific Journals Full-text Database, and Chinese Journal Full-text Database up to October 2010 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing psychotherapy plus conventional treatment with conventional treatment alone. The data were analyzed by using RevMan 5.0 software. Results Eleven RCTs involving 1 670 participants were included. The results of meta-analyses showed: (1) A significant difference was found between psychotherapy plus conventional treatment and conventional treatment alone in decrease of depression score (SMD= – 0.40, 95%CI – 0.70 to – 0.11); (2) No difference was observed between the two groups in decrease of anxiety score (SMD= – 0.68, 95%CI – 1.37 to 0.01), but the result was changed when a sensitivity analysis was done (SMD= – 0.30, 95%CI – 0.52 to -0.08). Conclusion Compared with conventional treatment alone, psychotherapy combined with conventional treatment could improve depressive states in cancer patients, but the result still needs to be confirmed by high-quality and large-sample RCTs.

  • Prefrontal dysfunction and mismatch negativity in adolescent depression: A multimodal fNIRS-ERP study

Early identification of adolescent depression requires objective biomarkers. This study investigated the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) activation patterns and mismatch negativity (MMN) characteristics in adolescents with first-episode mild-to-moderate depression. We enrolled 33 patients and 33 matched healthy controls, measuring oxyhemoglobin (Oxy–Hb) concentration in the frontal cortex during verbal fluency tasks via fNIRS, and recording MMN latency/amplitude at Fz/Cz electrodes using event-related potentials (ERP). Compared with healthy controls, the depression group showed significantly prolonged MMN latency [Fz: (227.88 ± 31.08) ms vs. (208.70 ± 25.35) ms, P < 0.01; Cz: (223.73 ± 29.03) ms vs. (204.18 ± 22.43) ms, P < 0.01], and obviously reduced Fz amplitude [(2.42 ± 2.18) μV vs. (5.65 ± 5.59) μV, P = 0.03]. A significant positive correlation was observed between MMN latencies at Fz and Cz electrodes (P < 0.01). Oxy-Hb in left frontopolar prefrontal channels (CH15/17) was significantly decreased in patient group (P < 0.05). Our findings suggest that adolescents with depression exhibit hypofunction in the left prefrontal cortex and impaired automatic sensory processing. The combined application of fNIRS and ERP techniques may provide an objective basis for early clinical identification.
